HWST 270: Hawaiian Mythology (Keliʻikuli): Evaluating sources

This guide was developed for students in Hawaiian Studies 270: Hawaiian Mythology, na Kumu Uʻilani Keliʻikuli.

What is the CRAAP test?

CRAAP is the acronym for the five criteria used to evaluate the credibility of sources.

Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, Purpose

Use the CRAAP test to evaluate the books and articles you find through the library's catalog and research databases and especially for sources found on the Web.

View the brief slideshow to learn more about the CRAAP criteria.

Acknowledgement

The Research Challenge was developed at Kapi'olani Community College by Joyce Tokuda, Learning Resources Librarian, and Reid Sunahara, Instructor.  The Leeward Community College Library acknowledges the generosity of our KCC colleagues in allowing us to adapt their module for use on this campus.

Evaluating sources using CRAAP criteria

Use this sheet when you are ready to evaluate your source.  A minimum score of 22.5 points is necessary for it to be considered a credible source.  You may encounter exceptions to the rule and some sources may be more difficult to evaluate than others.  Ask your instructor or librarian for assistance if you have difficulty evaluating a source.
