Frequently-Asked Reserves Questions

Why can't I find my textbook?

The library generally does not buy textbooks for its collection – they change often, and we just can't afford to keep up. Many instructors lend their own copies of textbooks to the library to put on reserve for their students to use.

Why can't I access this e-book?

Some e-books are only available for a limited number of simultaneous users. If you try to view an e-book and the e-book service tells you "Sorry, this eBook is in use", or tells you to try again later, or gives you the option to "Place a hold" rather than "Borrow", it means all available copies are currently in use.

If however, you get a message saying that you're not in the database or not in the Leeward user group, please contact Circulation Services so we can update your library account.

For other problems connecting to an e-book service, please see our Database Access Problems troubleshooting guide.

Loan Periods & Overdue Fines

Most course reserve items can be used in the library for 3 hours. Some items can be borrowed for 3 days. You will be told its due date/time when you receive the item. A fine will be charged for items not returned on time.

Overdue Fines

  • 3 Hour Library Use Only – $1/hour, charged at the beginning of each hour overdue
  • 3 Day Loan – $10
