Career Research Challenge: Quest 1

Quest 1: Refining your search terms

Keyword or topic searches are the most common searches people perform when they do research.  Keywords are significant words or terms that are used in searching library research databases and Internet search engines for information related to a topic.

Compiling a set of relevant keywords or phrases is vital to successful searching because they are the key to locating relevant sources on your topic.

When performing a keyword search in a database such as EBSCOhost Academic Search Complete you should not type conjunctions (and), prepositions (in, of, to), and articles (a, an, the). Just enter keywords to conduct your search.

Identify keywords or phrases describing your topic.

Be sure to think of any synonyms and/or related (broader or narrower) terms because databases and search engines categorize topics in different ways.
