Searching as Strategic Exploration

Searching for information encompasses inquiry, discovery, and serendipity. Searching is nonlinear and may take unexpected twists and turns. Expert researchers:

  • Consider information produced by many different types of sources
  • Use alternate search terms and exhibit flexible and creative search strategies

Finding Articles, Books, & More in the Library

Articles are stored in databases that are accessible to all Leeward students, staff, and faculty. Book records are found using the Primo OneSearch tool. Read below to learn more about accessing print and digital articles & books at Leeward Library.

Finding Articles

database is any collection of information, or data, that is organized in a way that makes it easy to find and retrieve the information quickly usually by computer. Leeward Library provides a variety of databases which you can use to locate information in the form of facts, statistics, books, magazine articles, etc. You may access these databases on campus or off-campus (to Leeward CC students, faculty, and staff only) 24 hours a day and seven days a week!

ProQuest US West Newsstream

Full-text articles from 270 news sources from Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Includes the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, and Hawaii Business.

MasterFILE Complete

Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, MasterFILE Complete also contains full text for more than 1,000 reference books and over 164,400 primary source documents, as well as an Image Collection of over 502,000 photos, maps & flags. 

Finding Books

Books contain historicalcomprehensive, and detailed information. Books are often long and full of useful information. To find a book at Leeward Library or any UH System Library, use our OneSearch tool, PRIMO.

Intra-System Loans: Requesting books from other UH campuses

Leeward CC students, staff, & faculty have access to books in all 10 UH Libraries!  This service is called Intra-System Loan, or ISL. Books requested through this service will be delivered to the Library's Circulation Desk.  You will receive an email when your requested book is ready for pick up.  

Finding Background Info

Credo Reference databases is a collection of over 700 authoritative reference books can be accessed from the Leeward Library home page. Use Credo Reference for a definition or topic overview as you start your research.

  • Find hundreds of specialized encyclopedias and dictionaries covering the arts, business, food, history, languages, law, literature, medicine, philosophy, psychology, religion, sciences, and social sciences
  • Find historic speeches, famous quotations, biographies, maps, and thousands of images of famous works of art

Accessing Credo Reference

From the Library's home page under Research, click "Full A-Z Database List," then select Credo Reference. (When accessing Credo Reference or any of the Library's online resources off-campus, you will need to login in with your UH user name and password.)

Basic Search

Type in your keyword(s) in the basic search box to find articles and more. 
  • Your search results may include Topic Pages which provide links to articles, books, images, and videos on your topic
  • Reference Entries include long and short articles and definitions
  • At the end of the article is a citation! One of the advantages of using Credo Reference or any other library research databases is the availability of automatic citation tools. Use the MLA citation format for ENG 24/98B and ESL 22.
